How do I become a Christian?

Confront the problem…

Humans have a natural desire to do their own thing and ignore God’s principles for living. The Bible calls this selfish, prideful attitude sin.

All of us, like sheep, have gone astray, and each of us has turned to his own way. Isaiah 53:6

If we say that we never sin, we are only fooling ourselves and refuse to accept the truth. 1 John 1:8

Sin breaks our relationship with God. It separates us from Him.

All have sinned and fall short of God’s glorious ideal. Romans 3:23

Humankind is fallen; its true for all of us. However, God wants a reunion.

Recognize what God has done…

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

God Himself came to earth as a human being to bring us back to Himself. Not only did Jesus teach us the Way of the Kingdom, He died the death we deserved and then rose from the tomb, breaking our pattern of sin and death.

The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23

God did this for us because He loves us and wants us to know Him.

God demonstrated His love for us in that while we were still separated from God by sin, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

There is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. 1 Timothy 2:5

Jesus is God in the flesh. He is God’s sole and perfect answer to the problem of our fallenness and sin. God has already done His part to restore our relationship to Him. He took the initiative. Now He waits for each of us to individually accept what He has done for us.

Respond  to what God has done…

Confess that God has not been in first place in your life’s priorities and ask Him to forgive you.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

Believe that Jesus died to pay for our sins and that He arose from the dead and is alive today.

If you confess that Jesus is your Lord, and you believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name (Jesus) under Heaven given to men by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12

Accept God’s free gift of salvation; don’t try to earn it.

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

Repent on our part means a change; a u-turn. It is a combination of the emotion (Godly sorrow) and the mind (the will to do things differently).

“Repent then and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out…” Acts 3:19

Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2:38

Be baptized or immersed into Christ.

And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. Acts 8:38

Follow Jesus through the Holy Spirit’s help.

"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5
